Doctors & Staff

Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Woodley Optometry a proud provider of vision care products and services in Encino.

Christine Cheng, OD

Hello there! I was born and raised in the Baychristine Area. I received my bachelor’s degree in Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley and Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry. My optometric experience includes the Optometric Center of Los Angeles, the U.S. Naval hospital in Okinawa (come in to see pictures!) and residency training at the VA West Los Angeles Healthcare System where I received extensive experience in diagnosing and managing eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. My interests include fitting specialty contact lenses and working with children. I am an active member of the American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association and Los Angeles County Optometric Society.

In my spare time, I love trying new restaurants and writing reviews, practicing yoga, and traveling, especially using credit card points! I recently moved to Sherman Oaks and would love suggestions on places to eat.

I met Dr. Jay at a lecture while completing my residency at VA West LA. I joined his practice in December 2015 and together we formed Woodley Optometry. Although we come from completely different backgrounds, we share the same value – the importance of family. Both of us, along with the staff, work together as a unit and when you become our patient, you join the Woodley Optometry family. Your vision is important to all of us here. I look forward to serving your vision needs!

Jay Schlanger, OD

Hi folks,

For those of you who I have yet to see, here is a quick bio on me. I was born in LA. Went to University High School, did 2 years at USC (although I am a loyal Bruin fan) and went to optometry school at UC Berkeley. I started practicing optometry in 1977 and have always focused my practice on difficult contact lens fitting (that’s how I met my wife) and eye disease diagnosis and treatment. I pride my practice in being a friendly, no rush, personal style of practice. I consider my patients like family. I like to spend time getting to know my patients on a personal basis. This helps me to better provide you the glasses or contact lenses that you need.

I started practicing at Cedars Sinai with several ophthalmologists. It was a fantastic experience to be involved with many of the new and innovative changes in eye care, such as laser surgery, implants, and keratoconus treatments from their early times. I have been involved in over 11 FDA studies on laser vision correction and over 10 FDA studies on contact lenses. I moved out to the valley about 10 years ago. Presently, I am involved in developing new scleral lens designs for patients with keratoconus, transplants, herptic eye disease and other advanced problems with the cornea.

I have 3 sons and 3 granddaughters. I live here in the valley. My wife, Lydia, told me that she married me because I was the first person to fit her successfully with contacts and because I was the only guy she met who could cook as good as her, and all this time I thought it was because of my dashing good looks! She just retired from teaching elementary school last year and is enjoying reading and being with our grand kids. As you can see by the photo, I love old rock and roll music and have taken up playing the banjo.

I look forward to meeting you and learning about you, your family and how I can help you to see the best you can. See you soon.

Doc Jay.

Svetlana Vinarnik, Optician

Message from Svetlana

My name is Svetlana Vinarnik. I was born in a small town, Bobruisk, Belarus. I came to the United States in 1992 with my family. Since I only knew Russian, I started taking classes in English at the ORT Institute here in the San Fernando Valley.  In 1994 during my studies, I decided to enroll in medical school to get a diploma as a medical assistant.  Unfortunately, at that time jobs were scarce in that field and I needed to work to support my family.  I found a job as a security supervisor at the LAX airport in 1994 and I worked there until 1997.

In 1998, I decided to change my career and pursued an education in the optical field as an optician. I graduated in 1999 have been working as an optician for the past seventeen years. I really love my job and extend the best service possible to Dr. Jay’s patients.

I have been happily married for over thirty five years. I have one son, Roman, who got married one year ago. He has a Master’s Degree in illustration and he is working as an art teacher at Saint Joseph Catholic School.
